Hi from Havre de Grace

We made it to Havre de Grace Maryland in the upper Chesapeake Bay. Internet access has been a major problem for us so far. We are going to get a mobile broad band card in the next few days so we can keep this site up to date. We have really been pushing ourselves to get as close to D.C as possible since we have a flight on 10/17. Here is a run down of the trip to date.

Oct. 6 Tuesday Glen Cove to Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn.

We had a nice trip through the East river with Drake. Herve and Martin helped us cast off.

Oct. 7 Wednesday Sheepshead Bay weather delay.

Gusts up to 50 mph several boats were dammaged back in G.C., but we were well protected in a small bay. Too rough to dinghy to shore.

Oct. 8 Thursday Sheepshead Bay to Manasquan NJ (Point Pleasant)

We attempted to pay for the second night we moored at Sheepshead bay, but there was no launch operator on duty at 8:30. Sorry SBYC we will get you on the way back. Very nice sail into Manasquan. The channel was much deeper than reported, but there was very little room to anchor. We put out an two anchors fore and aft just out side the channel before the marinas.

Oct. 9 Manasquan NJ

Weather Delay. High wind and Seas. Several other boats joined us in this less than ideal anchorage.

Oct. 10 Manasquan NJ

We got up at 7:15 to start a long sail to Atlantic City. We had great difficulty pulling up the aft anchor and we weren't ready to leave until 10:30. Since this wouldn't get us to Atlantic City until very late we decided to stay put and explore.
Nicole went down in air hockey 3 games to 0 (but they were all really close.) Chad spent about 7 dollars trying to win an i pod touch with a crane that was not even large to fit one. Pretty boardwalk and beach though.

Oct. 11 Manasquan NJ to Atlantic City

We had very long sail/motor to Atlantic City and we set our anchor just east of the bridge at 9pm. We quickly made our way to the Borgata where Chad turned $20 into $155 with a few lucky turns of the roulette wheel. Nicole was not so lucky with her first time on the roulette table. She lost $20 but since Chad gave her the 20 and forced her to gamble we don't need to feel too bad for her.

Oct. 12 Atlantic City to Cape May

Another long sail (this time mostly sailing) to Cape May NJ. We anchored behind the Coast Guard station facing the Cape May Canal with a bunch of other sailboats all heading in the same general direction- south! Although we definitely wanted to go to shore to explore the Victorian charm of Cape May we were too tired and cold. Hopefully we can catch it on our way back.

Oct 13 Cape May to Greenwich, NJ (Cohanssey River)

Motored through the Cape May Canal with a long line of sailboats. Finally had a brief break in the horribly cold weather we were experiencing since Manasquan. Sun was shining and had a great time sailing for about 1 hour before we experienced the wrath of the Delaware Bay- gray, 30+ knot gusts and choppy, high waves for the next 4 hours. We motor sailed under a double reefed main and engine at full power and we were only able to make 3 knots. We finally arrived in a small, relatively uninhabited harbor in southern Jersey. Marshland everywhere. We motored three or four miles up the winding Cohanssey River. We found at least two of the sailboats we left Cape May with and enjoyed a deep sleep until early the next morning.

Oct 14 Greenwich to Chesapeake City MD

We motored against the current through the rest of the Delaware bay and the the C&D canal. Half way through the canal we stopped for fuel and continued on to a small anchorage basin on the west end of the canal. We were disappointed when we saw how small and shallow the anchorage basin was, but when we realized we were the first of five more boats to arrive our situation suddenly seemed much better.

Oct 15 Chesapeake City to Havre De Grace

Woke up at 6am to beat a Nor Easter. After checking into the yacht club we were pleasantly surprised to find our 75 cent/foot mooring included access to a club van!

This brings us up to the minute as we sit in Coakley's enjoying pirated wifi, beer and snow crab legs. Hope everyone is doing well:-) Click on the "Follow this blog link" to see our updates. Pics to come soon!
